Something is wrong with my electric yellow:(

I am in grad school and still living in the halls and needed a companion. Marty is my second electric yellow (George had an untimely death during my undergrad) and has been doing great in his 10 gallon tank. Yesterday i noticed that he had an unusual lump in his throat as if something was stuck in there. I gave him some of the cichlid flakes that he has always had and he swam to the top of the tank to at as usual, but wouldnt eat. He behaved as if he wanted to, but couldnt actually take the food. After this he would puff his gills as if he was trying to unlodge that lump. This afternoon the lump was still there and i called a friend that managed a pet store for years and knows fish well. He had Marty out of the tank and decided that he couldnt actually se something in there and ruled it out as an air bubble as well. We put him back in the tank and 30 minutes later i came to check on him and the lump was gone. I fed him right away since he has not eaten in two days and he immediately ate. However after he took two flakes, the lump returned and he stopped eating:( This is really weird to me because he has never had a problem like this and neither did the last one i had for two years being fed on the the same food. I do not have the capabilities to take the water parameters, but the water was changed on Dec. 22 and Jan 8 because of moving the tank for break. Otherwise, my filter keeps the tank clean. I feed him once a day, though the timing is very irregular because of my schedule:( This is about all the information i have, let me know if you have any insight on this!

Thanks!
Abby

Re: Something is wrong with my electric yellow:(

Can you post a photo somewhere? Are you sure "he" hasn't laid eggs?

Also, having the water parameters will enable everyone to help diagnose your problem.

Right off the bat, I'd suggest getting him a bigger tank. A 10 gallon tank is really small, and although it seems counter-intuitive a small tank is much more difficult to maintain than a small one because the water parameters are more stable the larger the volume of water.
