euthinization.

on this sight under euthinasia there is in my opinion and the canadian SPCA a very bad way to put a fish down. Its says that a combination of 50% ice and 50% water will kill it instantly. well it doesnt. they suffer badly for at least 5 minutes. the spca recomends clove oil , alka seltzer, or a combination of both. this is the fish equivlant of being anestitised, almost like running the car in the garage with the door closed.

I am an aquarium maintenance technitian...or as my clients call me...the fish doctor. very recently we had to put down a 31 year old pacu that was dying. we treated his 400 gallon tank with 3200 tabs of alka seltzer since there wasnt enough clove oil available here. he went down quickly and painlessly.

Us as keepers pull these animals from the wild and imprison them. when the time comes we owe it to them to do this terrible chore humanely and with dignity. a lil expense shouldnt matter....

Re: euthinization.

bikeguy33,

I had not heard about using clove oil or alka seltzer to euthanize fish.

It sounds like I may have to modify that page a bit. In my experience, when having to euthanizing smaller fish, the ice bath does kill them almost instantly. I guess for larger fish such as a pacu that may not work as well.

Thanks for that information.

Re: euthinization.

You are quite welcome, and thanks for the new info. Unfortunately, all too often fish end up in situations where they are better of dead. Mostly because their keepers just don't know how to properly take care of them. Hopefully, folks like yourself can help spread the word about how to properly take care of our aquatic friends.

I too am always learning new things about fish keeping and welcome your input.

:)

Re: euthinization.

It looks like 8 alka seltzer tablets per gallon is what you used for the pacu. What's the concentration of clove oil you suggest? (I'm updating that page right now and want to include the info).

Re: euthinization.

all the info i have found has been 10 drops per gallon....but in this case the more the better. i recomend 12-15 just to ensure quick death. the fish will go through a "death thrawl"....but that isnt the fish fighting to survive....it is the nerves final good-bye. clove oil can be bought at health food stores or drug stores. i hope this helped....and thanx alot for updating the site. i work with fish every day and i dread how some are put down. i am glad you and the rest here care enough to spend a lil cash and do it right....btw....we used 14 tabs of alka seltzer per gallon ....just to make sure it was done quickly....cost alot more but was worth it.
