How Do I Help a Big Fish in Too Small of a Tank?

An e-mail sent this to me a few weeks ago. Here is her initial question and my responses.

Re: How Do I Help a Big Fish in Too Small of a Tank?

I responded:

That fish certainly thanks you for your help. :)

The best thing to do would be to see if you could get a photo of it and send it to me. I'll let you know what kind of fish it is.

Then (and even if you can't get a photo) take a look in your local phone book for fish stores and call them up. Ask them if they sell african cichlids and ask them if they'd take this fish.

Any shop that sells Africans should take it for you and would be the best bet in finding him a proper home.

Let me know how this turns out.

:)

Re: How Do I Help a Big Fish in Too Small of a Tank?

Going from a small tank to a large tank wouldn't hurt him in the least. hat fish would love to be in a larger tank with more water.

What would hurt him would be doing the transfer incorrectly.

If you transport him from his existing tank IN THE SAME WATER that he's currently in, and then properly acclimate him to his new environment he'll be fine.

Here's an article on properly acclimating fish to new tanks.

Re: How Do I Help a Big Fish in Too Small of a Tank?

I absolutly agree with getting him to a pet store...alot of stores have large display tanks FILLED with cichlids. even if they dont give any money or store credit at least the fish will be happy.
